Why yes, I was deprived of cards as a child, thanks for asking. The only decks we have around our house are the crappy Singapore Airlines ones (made more crappy in these latter days by making Chinese flashcards out of them).

I think everybody has a secret elementary school playground shame. Victor can't whistle or snap his fingers, and Jon can't swing. So to all my readers: what's yours?

P.S. I'm practicing a card trick. It's not very good yet, but ask me, and I'll show you.

Monday, December 26, 2005

Just posted up the India and Singapore pictures. Most of them aren't that good, since when it comes right down to it, I don't know the first thing about photography. But you can find them here if you have a facebook account. If not, here are three photos:

Communists!

A fruit stand I happened to pass on a side street. I think this is about where I got tired of trying to come up with clever captions.

Taken in a tiny rural village in inland Karnataka. Chances are, this girl will never have the opportunity to go elsewhere.

Sunday, December 04, 2005

Oh, I nearly forgot! I got a letter to the editor published in the Aggie. 200 words published in a student newspaper: I could just die right now, Clem.

Here's the full chain of everything I was responding to:

Jessica Brunsvik's Nov. 17 article > Brandon Heat's Nov. 22 letter > Adam Katz's Nov. 29 letter > My Dec. 1 letter.

Unfortunately, the editor kinda bowlderized it. There was a dash ...

Oh crap, it looks like all the links are broken because the bloody Aggie just redesigned their website. Anyway, here's the letter that I sent:
With respect to Adam Katz’s Nov. 29th letter, I’m reminded of Jack Nicholson’s
speech in A Few Good Men. Katz’s argument is as flawed as Nicholson’s, as the ending of the film makes clear: everyone has the duty to question the manner in which the government provides freedom—or fails to.

As for Jessica Brunsvik’s impassioned plea for supporting equality of access to public school campuses by military recruiters or private companies ("Don’t be all you don’t want to be", Nov. 17), I’d like to take this opportunity to say that I’m all for equality. We can start talking about equality when the military (like other prospective employers) can't obtain secondary school students’ names and personal information upon request, or when the military (like other prospective employers) allows openly gay and lesbian people to join its ranks. It’s a similarly odd notion of “equality” that allows Brunsvik and Katz not to see injustice when the economically disadvantaged are pressured into joining the military for lack of other options. “The law, in its majestic equality,” as Anatole France noted, “forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.”

Raghav Krishnapriyan
junior, chemistry
The stupid editor removed my awesome Anatole France quote from the end. It's like Lee Judge said, bring an editor the Ten Commandments and they'll take one out.

Sunday, December 04, 2005

Friday, December 02, 2005

Beastly weather we've been having. I've always wanted to say that; it sounds very New-Englandy-wannabe-British. But really, temperatures like this are indecent. If there was a rating board for weather, this would be rated NC-17.

I've been watching movies. Here are some good movies:

Serenity: Set about six months after the end of Joss Whedon's incredible series, Firefly, Serenity really is a good contender for "best science fiction movie ever." (Orson Scott Card seems to think so, too.) The scriptwriting is gold: engaging, and sometimes even witty. And then there's the subtle ridicule of science fiction clichés, and the abandonment of the stupider archetypes of the genre. Check it out!

I ♥ Huckabees: Existentialist comedy. Fun. Nice soundtrack. Just don't take it too seriously.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: I haven't seen any of the Harry Potter movies since the first one (I gave up in disgust.) But this one is actually pretty good. Of course, they cut out a lot of scenes, especially from the beginning, so that the movie wouldn't be about 16 hours long. But it's not like it's going to suck if you haven't read the books.

Pride and Prejudice: Unfortunately, it's been injuriously Brontëfied.

And a week from today, the new Narnia movie, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe comes out, starring New Zealand and a computer. While I never particularly liked the books, and the producers have apparently attempted to tone down the Christian themes (which I wonder how they managed), this looks to be a decent "after finals" movie.
